Programmable thermostats are basically thermostats that come with a time-switch and thermostat in one.
In using one of these products, you are effectively able to control the temperature of your home so that it’s as hot or as cool as you like. In recent years, Wi-Fi thermostats have hit the market, allowing users to program their thermostats from wherever they may be on their phone, which allows for a personal touch that means the user’s home is the right temperature upon arrival.
With the ability to control your air cooling and heating systems along with your radiators from wherever you are, it’s no wonder programmable thermostats have risen in popularity.
Gone are the days when users would head home, hoping that their heating system had turned on. Now you can make sure it has and tailor the exact amount of heat or cool air that you need. This means that no matter where you are, as long as you have your cell phone with you, or as in some cases access to your profile via a computer, you can turn your temperature up or down.
For example, if you are expecting today to be cold, you may have already programmed your thermostat so that your home is nice and warm when you walk through the door. However, if the day turned out to be warmer than you expected, you can simply turn the heating down or off, so that your home doesn’t feel like an oven.
Programmable thermostats have recently seen a rise in popularity simply because more and more people want to make use of smart technology. The idea of being able to control the temperature of your home no matter where you are is something that appeals to everyone. We live in a very technological age, in which we can harness the power of recently developed technology and use it to our advantage. This means that no matter what the weather is doing outside, you can tailor the amount of heat or cool air in your home to your personal preferences, all thanks to the wonder of modern and futuristic technology.
Brief histories: Nest vs Honeywell
When we compare products that have been made by different companies, we like to have a look at who they are, how they got here, and what they plan to do in the future. This helps us determine who is likely to produce better products based on their experience and what they have previously manufactured.
Nest, also known as “Nest Labs” was founded in 2010 by two engineers who formerly worked for Apple. An American company that specializes in home automation, Nest is thought to be the very first brand to manufacture and sell thermostats and other products that allow the user to personalize aspects of the product that have never been personalized before. Inspired by one of the founders who was unable to find a thermostat that was good enough, Nest continues to develop products that are part of the emerging smart home industry, and was purchased by Google for approximately $3.2 billion in 2014
The Honeywell company was established in 1906 when the founder marketed his very first invention. Honeywell may be one of the oldest firms in the United States. The brand continued to grow when, in 1927, it merged with the Minneapolis Heat Regulator Company. Fast forward to 2016 and Honeywell settled a dispute with Nest due to an alleged infringement, just after they acquired Xtralis, a company who produced smoke detectors that had advanced capabilities. Honeywell continues to produce products that appeal to smart home customers and continues to be a global brand.
Programmable thermostats: Nest Versus Honeywell
If you’re planning on making your home a smart home, we recommend that you use a Nest or Honeywell thermostat. You may hear some people say that they don’t trust the technology, but these thermostats are ideal if you want to control the temperature in your home via an app on your phone.
If you are happy to spend the money on a programmable thermostat, we recommend the Nest Learning Thermostat 3rd Generation. This product can work with Amazon Alexa, although you will have to buy it separately, and an auto-schedule that basically means Nest starts to learn which temperatures you like your home to be set at and when. You can also use this thermostat with your Google Home device, although this will have to be purchased separately too. However, if you have a Google/Samsung cell phone, you should be able to control it via your phone too. Just make sure you have one of the latest cell phones, as some earlier models may not be compatible.
This thermostat also comes with a fancy feature known as “Farsight.” It spots you from across the room, lighting up so you can see what the time is, how warm it is, and even what the weather is like. Controlling more than half of your energy bill so that you start saving money, the Nest Learning Thermostat is the very first thermostat to earn an “Energy Star,” which is awarded to products that help save the user a lot of energy.
If you want to spend a bit less money on a new thermostat, you might want to consider buying the Honeywell Wi-Fi Smart Programmable Touchscreen Thermostat. This model may not look as futuristic as the Nest model, but it does have some impressive capabilities. Ideal for use with Android, iPad, and iPhone apps, this Honeywell model comes with a seven-day scheduling feature, a function that lets it know you’re on vacation, and touchscreen capabilities.
This model automatically heats or cools your home, depending on what the temperature is and how hot or cool you like it to be. You can also control the speed of your fans, which makes this thermostat ideal if you live in a very hot part of the country or if you simply like the feel of cool air on your skin. This thermostat is great at meeting just about all of your schedule requirements, which ultimately means you can pick what temperature you want to wake up to, come home to, and what you would like the temperature to be when you’re at work. With remote access that means you can program this thermostat from just about anywhere, this model is certainly set to impress and is one of the most affordable thermostats on the market.
Honeywell’s most impressive thermostat seems to be the Honeywell Wi-Fi Smart Thermostat TH9320WF5003, which does have a futuristic look the other Honeywell model lacked. With a silver frame and a blue/white display, it does look just as good as the Nest model, but it is a lot more expensive. If you’re willing to pay a lot of money for a good thermostat, this could be the ideal one for you. With a relatively simple setup and the ability to change the color scheme to suit your décor, the TH9320WF5003 looks like it could be here to stay.
The TH9320WF5003 does have quite a complicated set-up process, which could prove to be difficult for some, but once the thermostat is set up, everything else will be fairly easy from there. Be warned that this model is quite small, which means if you put it in the same place as your old thermostat, you may be able to see exactly what your old paintwork looked like.
Old paint aside, there is a particularly useful on-screen “Help” button, which will answer a few questions for you should you be a little stuck. The easy-to-read temperature display tells you how hot and humid it is outside and inside, making the Honeywell TH9320WF5003 ideal if you want a “No frills” smart thermostat that is simple to use.
Another great feature of the Honeywell Wi-Fi Smart Thermostat TH9320WF5003 is that just like the Nest Learning Thermostat, the TH9320WF5003 is also capable of learning what your typical energy habits are, setting the temperature accordingly. This feature is particularly useful if the temperature outside has changed recently, or you’ve forgotten to set the temperature for the next seven days.
The Bottom Line
The bottom line is that we like all of the thermostats because they come with some impressive features and can help you tailor the temperature of your home to your needs.
Nest and Honeywell are great brands with a lot to offer potential customers; however, we do favor the Nest model a little more as it costs less than the Honeywell TH9320WF5003. Even though the Nest model does not have touchscreen capabilities, it is a lot cheaper than the TH9320WF5003, and although both Honeywell models are good, we think Nest is the clear winner. However, if you don’t want to spend very much on a thermostat, the Honeywell Wi-Fi Smart Programmable Touchscreen Thermostat could be exactly what you need.
